Sometimes I wonder whether one could design PLC-style software by first expressing the system’s constraints and then writing the actual code and having either (preferably) formal verification that the code will not violate the constraints or (less preferably) enforced assertions that will send the machine into a safe state if the constraints do not hold.
The system I mentioned in my other post controlled some VFDs, and one would occasionally get stuck running at minimum speed forever instead of turning all the off when it should have. Fortunately the only harm done was a stupid waste of power and and nothing was physically damaged. If it had gotten stuck at maximum speed it might have been a different story.

The bigger problem, for me, is that knowledge work has become stupid. If you want to write code by hand and do a good job, you will be ruthlessly replaced by your boss churning out "good enough" LLM code.
The CEO at my company tried to PR code to my repo. It didn't make any sense but it was a whole political thing to make it go away.
The industry has always been stupid and selfish and short-sighted but now the ICs at the bottom of the pyramid are themselves being commoditized like all the workers they "disrupted".
HBM requires stacking the chips. So they need to shave the layers, glue, stack more, shave again. They also require a substrate what is even more wafers. The issue is that a error in the stack means a lot of losses.
In order to get high bandwidth, you want memory as close as possible to the GPU. The more trace lane length = signal loss, bandwidth loss.. HBM is compact, and so you can stack 24GB modules, 8 around a GPU die.
If you tried to do that with normal memory, you need like 64 modules. So a a TON of traces more that all need to be equal length, and because so many = far away from the GPU = less bandwidth.
The issue is like stated above, its a process that waste a ton of wafers. Wafers that can make easily 3x more normal memory.
Intel with "Crescent Island" is trying to make a 160GB card using LPDDR5x memory but the bandwidth is only ~700GB/s.
Fortunately I’m at a startup with basically infinite Fable 5, and it is legitimately a huge step forward over Opus 4.8. Would recommend. Hopefully some open weight models catch up to its capabilities soon.
It looks like they're taking applications for training data (due August 14th), so I think it's safe to say this is just an announcement of intent and a call for involvement vs. something that is readily available. Seems almost quaint in comparison to the strategy of sucking up every piece of data you can find anywhere on the Internet and feeding it to your LLM but I suspect their intent is to be more careful in what they train their model on.

I really like Linear's approach to project management, but for many of my projects GitHub Issues and Projects already contain everything I need.
So I built Ginear: a Linear-inspired project management UI that uses GitHub as the backend.
Issues, projects, labels and assignees stay in GitHub, so there's no separate database or synchronization layer for project data.
The UI is based on the open-source Circle design system by ln-dev7, which I connected to the GitHub API and extended into a working GitHub client.
The project is open source and still early. I'd especially love feedback on what would make this useful enough to replace the GitHub Issues/Projects UI for you.
Another odd observation about the industry. For better or for worse, I inherited a little system controlled by a Fanuc PLC. It had a bug and would occasionally get stuck in a bad state. By some minor miracle, I managed to track down the person who had originally programmed it (now retired and moved out of state), and he emailed me a file and introduced me to his apprentice (who lives in a third state). I found a trial version of the design software, opened the file and found the bug (despite never having seen this style of programming before). Since I had no way to upload a new file (and since it wasn’t clear that uploading it without a matching outdated and not easily available copy of the programming environment would be wise), I convinced the apprentice to come visit while we was nearby for another client. He did not see the bug even when I pointed it out, but I convinced him to make the change and upload the modified file. Now the system works. (He had a Windows laptop with a giant folder of customer files, of course.)
While he was on site, I asked him why there was nothing on the PLC or its enclosure to identify his old boss or give any contact information, and he seemed surprised and told me that no one ever does that. I asked how a new owner is supposed to get support, and he shrugged.
If this thing ever fails, I’ll probably replace it with an Arduino or an ESP32 or something along those lines. Or I’ll just find something off the shelf to replace the entire system.

Online tools to simplify this process like Perseus have existed for at least 15 years, and you could view original texts side by side with English for comparison, and original words have all their cross-references hyperlinked etc. All maintained by academics committed to rigorous and nuanced approaches to translation.
Ancient Library is some vibecoded alternative that the LLM translation it uses will be incorrect. Color me unimpressed.
I think the implicit assumption is that if you explained to the owner of the website what the scraper was doing, they would be more than happy to allow it.
The bot was also being generally courteous, only scraping the 2-3 pages needed to get the information for the human who spun up the LLM.

I run an ecommerce site and I'm actually more worried about bots being rejected than accepted because of stuff like GP. We get a decent amount of business through ChatGPT.
Opinions aren't genetic, so that's not very good logic. I guess the logic depends on a culture passing on a value - by means of words, not by genetics - such as spawn furiously to the next generation, who accept it uncritically. That would be a version of (2) I guess: mindless reproduction along with hostility to thinking about it, with memes as the mechanism. This memetic condition would tend to win, you'd think, except somehow it hasn't won already, and we are still somewhat mentally capable of considering our reproductive options. Perhaps having children thoughtfully is the only effective way, and so it must necessarily be by choice.
